The terms you will meet along the way, in plain language.
- DPP
- Digital Product Passport: product-linked information and access mechanisms.
- DPP URL
- A web address used to access product-passport information.
- GS1
- The organisation and standards system for identifying, capturing and sharing supply-chain information.
- GTIN
- Global Trade Item Number, an identifier for a trade item.
- UPC-A
- A retail barcode symbol that carries a GTIN-12.
- UPC-E
- A compact UPC symbol using defined zero-suppression rules.
- EAN-13
- A barcode symbol that carries a GTIN-13.
- EAN-8
- A barcode symbol that carries a GTIN-8.
- GCP
- GS1 Company Prefix; use confirmed allocation information for encoding.
- Check digit
- A calculated digit used to detect certain input errors.
- EPC
- Electronic Product Code, a family of identity schemes and representations.
- SGTIN
- Serialised Global Trade Item Number, identifying an individual instance.
- Serial
- A serial number that distinguishes instances within the relevant identity.
- Filter
- Tag-level control information used in EPC filtering; not part of the pure identity.
- Partition
- The field split used for company prefix and item reference in certain EPC encodings.
- RFID
- Radio-frequency identification: reading data using radio communication.
- QR Code
- A two-dimensional symbol that can carry a web address or other data.
- Digital Link
- A standard way to express GS1 identifiers in web URIs.
- Resolver
- A service that directs an identifier-based request to relevant information.
- MCP
- Model Context Protocol, connecting AI applications with tools and information.
- AI (GS1)
- Application Identifier: a prefix indicating the meaning and format of a GS1 data field; unrelated to artificial intelligence.
- SKU
- Stock keeping unit: an internal inventory reference, not automatically a GTIN.
- EPCIS
- GS1 standard for sharing visibility event data about objects and their business context.
- NFC
- Near Field Communication; a different radio technology from the UHF RFID tags used in many bulk-reading workflows.
- TID
- Tag Identification memory in an RFID tag; separate from its EPC identity data. Contents depend on the tag and specification.
- ESPR
- Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (EU) 2024/1781: a framework supplemented by product measures.
- DPPSP
- Digital product passport service provider: an authorised independent third party as defined by ESPR.
- DPP Registry
- EU registry for passport identifiers and associated metadata; separate from the decentralised underlying product data.
