A QR code is an entry point. The product data and the service behind it make that entry point useful.

A product has a story beyond its label

A label has limited space. A product may also have material information, repair instructions, supporting documents and end-of-life guidance. A Digital Product Passport (DPP) connects structured product information to an identifiable product so that the relevant people can access it.

Start with the applicable product rules

The EU ESPR sets a framework. Product-specific rules determine details such as the required data, access and whether a passport refers to a model, a batch or an individual item. A framework date is not a universal deadline for every product.

Prepare the information before the artwork

A useful starting point is to map the information you have and who maintains it. Then choose how the product identity, data carrier and information service will stay connected. These are separate decisions that should agree with one another.

  • Identify the product and the required level of detail.
  • Record the source and owner of each piece of information.
  • Plan access, updates and long-term availability.

Separate the framework from a product deadline

ESPR is Regulation (EU) 2024/1781. For a specific product, establish the applicable act, product scope and application date before deciding the required passport. A separate example is Article 77 of the Batteries Regulation: from 18 February 2027 it requires a battery passport for LMT batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and electric vehicle batteries placed on the market or put into service. That date is not a general deadline for every product.

A passport needs a maintained information model

A product page, a certificate PDF and a passport are different deliverables. Under ESPR, the applicable rules determine the required data and access rights. In an implementation, map each field to its unit, evidence, responsible owner and update process. Public product information and restricted operational data may need different access. Keep version history and a recovery plan so a change of supplier does not break the product’s information trail.

What a successful scan establishes

A successful scan establishes that the carrier data can be read in that test. Opening the decoded URL is a separate action; DPPURL’s checker deliberately does not open it. It does not establish that the information is complete, current or applicable to the scanned item. Review the product identity, content evidence and operational availability separately. DPPURL supplies education and local identity tools; it does not register passports or issue compliance certificates.
