Start with the full UPC and the correct prefix information, then add a managed serial.

The number and the symbol

In everyday commerce, UPC often refers to the 12-digit GTIN. UPC-A is the familiar barcode symbol used to carry it. Distinguishing the data from its printed representation makes discussions with software and printing teams much clearer.

UPC-E needs its own expansion rules

UPC-E is a compact symbol with specific zero-suppression rules. It is not interchangeable with GTIN-8. Our EPC encoder’s UPC input means a complete 12-digit number, not a UPC-E symbol transcription.

Prepare for EPC conversion

Obtain the confirmed prefix allocation and a serial number. In this worked example, assume the allocated U.P.C. Company Prefix is 614141; the corresponding GS1/EPC company-prefix component is 0614141. That is seven digits in the tool’s selector. This assumption is part of the example, not something inferred from 614141123452 alone.

Do not strip zeroes indiscriminately

The sample UPC becomes 00614141123452 in a 14-digit GTIN field. The first zero is the indicator/padding position used in the SGTIN split; the next zero belongs to the 0614141 prefix component in this example. A parser must preserve both roles. A numeric spreadsheet column that turns the prefix into 614141 has lost information needed by the encoder.

Check the scanner’s complete output

Scanner settings can expand UPC-E, transmit or suppress a check digit, or add a symbology identifier. Record the symbology and output settings alongside a test scan before importing numbers. DPPURL’s encoder needs the complete GTIN-12; it does not infer omitted digits or expand a compressed UPC-E transcription.
